The interaction of laser radiation ( lambda equals 0. 58 mu ) pulses of approximately 10 usec duration with aluminum was studied in the range of radiation power densities q equals 5-60 MW/cm**2. The optical characteristics and the spatial and temporal temperature distributions along the axial region of a jet were determined. Measurements were made of the velocity of the leading edge of the jet and of the energy deposited in the target before the appearance of a burst of absorption. It is shown that in the range of q investigated and for an irradiation of an area about 0. 1 cm**2, the interaction with the aluminum resulted in evaporation.
