Mechanism of Nucleation of Cracks of Electroerosion Origin in Bi Single Crystal.

It is established that the main condition for the nucleation of cracks of electroerosion origin is the sticking of liquid anode drops to the damaged crystal surface which occurs under conditions where the erosion products cannot be evacuated easily. A theoretical interpretation of the experimental data obtained is made on the basis of a slip band stripping mechanism (R. Bullough's theory) and the theory of ″hot″ cracks. Calculations show that during electric erosion of bismuth crystals surface active agents are formed in the interelectrode space, thus leading to a reduction in the strength of the Bi crystal.
