The technology developed for government-supported programs often has many applications outside the immediate effort for which it was developed. In many cases, however, potential users are unaware of such technology, or lack the expertise needed to adapt it to their applications. To help nongovernment organizations make effective use of such technology, the Department of Energy has begun a formal transfer technology program. This work is a case history of one ambitious technology transfer effort: building a multijoule solid-state laser based on technology developed for large fusion lasers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
