A novel nonlinear adaptive optimal excitation controller

The paper presents a novel nonlinear adaptive optimal excitation controller. The design is based on a 3rd-order double-axis dynamic model of synchronous machine. Satisfactory performance of transient stability control and steady-state voltage regulation has been achieved, under variation of operating conditions, using nonlinear feedback compensation which is implemented by algebraic calculation. A simple adaptive gain-tuning algorithm is embedded in the controller to optimise, at different operating point, the preset LQ performance index and guidance is provided to determine the weighting matrix. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method in comparison with conventional linear optimal excitation controller.
