Pilot testing for combined treatment of leachate from a domestic waste landfill site

Pilot-test research of combined treatment of leachate and primary treated wastewater was undertaken in 1986 at the District of Chilliwack wastewater treatment plant, Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. Plant performance needed to be assessed and effects on sludge production and metal concentrations needed to be identified. The investigations were to include an understanding of effects on effluent quality in terms of 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD//5) and suspended solids (SS); effects on ammonia addition to the plant effluent quality; effects on sludge production; and effects on present heavy metal content in the sludge. The paper presents relevant findings of others, and the conclusions of the pilot-test program as it relates to a proposed treatment plant expansion.
