A previous study (EPRI report EM-3205) has shown that fuel cell power plants offer economic advantages from a system planning perspective. But other, potentially more important, benefits from a financial and corporate planning perspective had not been determined or thoroughly understood. It is pointed out that a fuel cell power plant's small size, modularity, and short lead time offer financial and strategic planning benefits to utilities. Under conditions of economic uncertainty, using fuel cells can reduce the price of electricity and total capitalization, improve financial indicators and reduce external financing - all at minimal risk.
