A problem with trihalomethane (THM) levels in its finished water required the Crawford Country Rural Water District Number 6 (CCRWD), Parsons, Kansas, to investigate methods of oxidizing THM precursors. Testing indicated that chlorine dioxide is a viable alternative for control of THMs at CCRWD. Furthermore, chlorine dioxide satisfactorily addressed the plant's problems with iron and manganese and with taste and odor, while allowing a very significant savings on activated carbon and potassium permanganate. © 1988 American Water Works Association.
