Injection Locking of Oscillators - 1, 2.

A simple analytic method is used to investigate the behavior of injection locked oscillators, both for harmonic and subharmonic operation. Assuming cubic nonlinearity, simple expressions are found which describe the boundaries of the synchronization regions and the relations between amplitude and frequency of the injected signal and amplitude and phase of the oscillator signal. With the help of these results the performance of synchronized oscillators used as amplifiers or demodulators for frequency- or phase-modulated signals is studied. The resulting distortions are expressed by simple formulas. The transient behavior of locking oscillators and the effect of noise superimposed on the injected signal are described. An extension of the theory to more general nonlinearities is presented.
