Tertiary filtration of wastewater presents difficulties in predicting process performance. Using pilot-plant data from the filtration of trickling filter plant effluent, (using 3 filter sets, each consisting of 4 filters of varying media depth), the authors demonstrate a method for selecting the size, depth, and filtration rate for use with dual-media, deep bed filters for wastewater filtration. Schematic arrangement of pilot tertiary wastewater filters as well as schematic diagram of individual filter cell (four cells in each filter set) are presented along with design data. Results of pilot plant operation are given.
