The importance of investigating the attenuation of waves in thin dielectric film guides for optical integrated systems is pointed out. Several experimental methods of performing such measurements are described. Distinctions are made according to the required accuracy, the db attenuation values and the effort involved in the experiment. Several comparative experiments are reported, and the resulting measurements explained.
