We present an implementation of the Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) protocol over an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network. This implementation allows the MMS protocol to take full advantage of the high communication bandwidth and the quality of services provided by the underlying ATM network. Our MMS/ATM network prototype is a software/hardware hybrid implementation. The ATM protocol stack is an on-board hardware implementation, whereas the MMS layer is a software implementation above the ATM board. In addition to standard functions, our MMS implementation includes new functions such as the mapping of application and network addresses. Also, we propose an extension of the MMS standard services to take into account ATM traffic and quality of service parameters. This paper describes some performances evaluation of our MMS/ATM implementation. Finally, we compare our implementation with the already existing MMS/OSI and MMS/TCP implementations.
