Effect of Alloying on the Fracture Toughness of Sintered Steel.

Using the concepts of linear fracture mechanics, a study was made of the crack propagation resistance of sintered steel containing 1%C and up to 4% of alloying elements (chromium and molybdenum). It was found that, in addition to increasing the strength level of the steel, alloying significantly increases the fracture toughness of the steel. An estimate is made of the critical dimensions of a surface crack for various values of the applied stress.
