BASIS WEIGHT AND MOISTURE CONTROL USING DISTRIBUTED MICRO COMPUTERS.

The Wayagamack Division of Consolidated-Bathurst Inc. is currently undergoing considerable modifications to make the mill more economical. Among the changes are the introduction of basis weight and moisture control systems for two kraft papermachines and a control system for the continuous kraft pulp digester. This report describes the first installation and the advantages of this approach. Briefly, the advantages are: low cost durable systems, development of in-house expertise for maintenance, control performance analysis, and new application identification, advantages that go with modular design, systems tailored to specific user needs, and hardware in each system is duplicated as much as possible to ease maintenance and the load on spare parts.
