It is emphasized that in recent years there has been a trend towards larger, more complex structures and foundations; also towards the development of sites which previously would have been considered uneconomical because of foundation costs. When a piled foundation is deemed necessary, the most important step in the design process is the selection of a type of pile economically and technically suitable for both the soil conditions and the structure to be supported. Types of land and marine structures are described.
