The paper describes a detailed experimental study of the stress-strain behavior of a 'wet' clay using constant rate of strain triaxial compression tests. Increments of undrained and drained shear were alternated with increments in which consolidation was permitted while the deviator stress was maintained constant. The technique enabled the state boundary surface associated with anisotropic stresses to be generated directly, by contrast with the Cam-clay work where the surface was interpolated from tests on isotropically consolidated samples.
