This special issue of the journal contains seven papers dealing with the state of the art, or technology, of quantitative x-ray analysis of structural phases of metals. The reason for the survey is the increasing use of this analytical tool in the determination of residual austenite, which has a significant effect on the strength of hardened structural steel parts. Unsolved problems are discussed and recommendations made.
