On formation of carbin (cyanopolyine) and diamond in Fe-C alloys

A problem of formation of carbin (cyanopolyine) as the 'linear' allotropic modification of crystalline carbon in Fe-C alloys (U8 steel, cast irons) is discussed. The cases of diamond crystals forming in solidifying austenitic cast iron are considered. Authors think that the small amount of carbin can be present in the cast iron austenitic phase (in axial zone of graphite branching). It is inferred that the Fe3C&rarr3Fe+C (diamond) reaction is possible at atmospheric pressure only over certain temperature range in which accem>acdiam (a - carbon activity).
