摘要
Chrysotile asbestos, which is used in asbestos-cement sheet products, is an imported material and costs the Indian exchequer a good deal in foreign exchange. An attempt has been made to find the possible substitute for chrysotile asbestos in the asbestos-cement sheet products. It was observed that wollastonite, which is a naturally occuring calcium silicate fibrous mineral in India, can be a good substitute. Based on the study conducted it was found that the substitution up to 10 percent of chrysotile fibre by wollastonite in asbestos-cement sheet products is possible without significantly affecting their properties. On the basis of this study successful factory trials were conducted for making asbestos-cement pressure pipes and asbestos-cement building boards.
