KZF, Inc. an architectural, engineering, planning and surveying firm of approximately 100 employees, changed its corporate structure from a studio to a matrix management system over two years ago. Previously, the production personnel were split into separate profit and loss centers: a Civil Engineering/Planning Studio and an Architectural/Engineering Studio. Within each studio, there were production staff and project managers to market, produce and manage the projects. In early 1978, major changes throughout the firm were made to shift into a matrix structure. All project managers then reported to a director of operations, and technical personnel were organized into nine separate disciplines under a director of technical services. These organizational changes have allowed KZF to enjoy a healthy increase in billings and profit during this period.
