This article gives an overview of punching in flat slabs. The physical behavior of slabs under loads is described, followed by a review of design methods in Codes of Practice. Methods of increasing the punching shear resistance including the use of structural steel shearheads are discussed. The use of lightweight aggregate concrete and the effect of prestressing on the punching shear resistance are also considered.
