Calibration techniques for mass flowmeters

A flow meter which measures mass flow rather than volume flow is an ideal solution where fluid properties may vary or are not accurately known, and new developments are showing considerable promise. However, a major obstacle to their acceptance for use in custody transfer and fiscal metering is the lack of accurate and conventional methods of proving them. This paper reviews possible approaches for both liquid and gas calibrations. It concludes that whilst central laboratory proving techniques may soon be available, methods of calibration in the field will take longer to develop.
