This article presents some personal experiences with companies implementing just-in-time (JIT), some generalizations important to implementers, and some serious concerns for the future. In so doing, the goal is to move toward the next phase of JIT - the development of ways to leapfrog the time barriers imposed by incremental improvement and learning curve limitations. The bases of the article are the two APICS Study Missions which the author has made to Japan, interactions with other professional JIT implementers and discussions with senior management.
