摘要
In 1978-1979, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) undertook a series of studies which suggested that extending the operation of current nuclear generating units beyond their nominal 40-year license term was both technically feasible and economically attractive. In 1984, these results were reviewed and confirmed and more detailed evaluations initiated. Major elements include: (a) identification of life extension as a strategic element of the EPRI Nuclear Division program; (b) formulation of a joint EPRI/Department of Energy (DOE) program plan to culminate in the licensing of a generating unit(s) for extended life; and (c) initiation of two extensive studies, by and with utilities, to provide guidelines for such achievement. The pilot studies began in early 1985. This paper describes the backgound and status of these efforts to date.
