摘要：
The construction of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal has been subject to fervent public discussions for a long time already. This project should, however, be seen in the light of the policy to create a network of waterways for freight economies in goods transports throughout the European regions. Another segment of this net of waterways is the shipping tunnel at Weilburg and der Lahn (until now the only fluvial shipping tunnel in Germany) which was put into operation in October 1847. The article reports on the background and history of this canal project.
