Tests of fire resistance, stability and lubrication properties were carried out to determine how the performance of the new carboxylate esters matches that of the established triaryl phosphates. A comparison of the properties of the established synthetic triaryl phosphate ester hydraulic fluids with the more recently introduced oleate esters showed that the oleate esters are more fire-resistant than mineral oils, but considerably less fire-resistant than the synthetic triaryl phosphate esters.
