Self-energized grease or oil cartridges are described that fill a need between manual grease fittings and elaborate central lube systems. The cartridge is designed to operate by electrolytically generating its own hydrogen gas propellant. The electrolytic action begins immediately upon installation and progresses continuously until lubricant has been completely extruded. Choice of electrolyte determines the rate of grease extrusion. One problem is that once the discharging action begins it will proceed undiminished until the grease is gone, whether or not the bearing needs it. Another type of grease cartridge, the spring-powered one, is also discussed.
