DIRECT REDUCTION HEATS UP IN STEELMAKING.

A mini-hydraulic slurry mining program that is scheduled to strip 265,000 cu yd of redeposited silt from the Caland open-pit iron mine near Aitkon, Ont. , is described. The program is a microcosm of an earlier project at the site - one of the largest preproduction dredging and water diversion projects in mining and construction history - but it will help Caland, an Inland Steel Co. subsidiary, obtain a new lease on mining life. For Marconflo, the Caland effort marks the first use of its slurry repulp and reclaim system at an open-pit mine - a new addition to a growing list of actual and conceptual slurry handling applications. A tandem set of Marconflo units, Dynajet 1000 capsule and a caisson 1000 jet, are briefly described.
