We present a comprehensive investigation of the valence band of the single-layered manganite LaSrMnO4. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray emission spectroscopy were used to reveal a detailed picture of the total and partial densities of states in this compound. The results are discussed in the light of available theory. © 2006 American Institute of Physics;
