Sidewall functionalization and characterization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes

The free radical addition reaction of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with succinic acid acyl peroxides resulted in the addition of carboxylic acid groups to the sidewalls of MWCNTs. And these carboxylic acid groups were converted to acid chlorides and then to amides. Characterizations were carried out by FTIR, Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results indicated that carboxylic acid groups were covalently attached on the sidewalls of MWCNTs, and the number of carboxylic acid groups was increased compared with the purified carbon nanotubes. The ratio of I(D +2D)/IG, which represents the disorder value of MWCNTs, increased by 0.2, and the absorb peak appeared around 320nm on the UV-Vis spectra of acyl functionalized MWCNTs due to π&rarrπ* transition of -CONH- bond.
