Time-dependent reliability analysis of reinforced concrete beams subjected to bending and marine atmospheric environment

A time-dependent model of corrosion rate of steel rebars was established by introducing influential coefficients of stress level to chloride diffusion model with consideration of the influence of load. A stochastic analysis was conducted using the model to assess the influence of spatial variability of pitting corrosion on the reliability of corroded reinforced concrete beams, in which the beam was discretized into a series of small elements and the probability of failure of the beam was evaluated as the union of the element failures. Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to evaluate the time-dependent reliability of a reinforced concrete beam subjected to bending and marine atmospheric environment. The results show the importance of considering spatial variability of pitting corrosion and the influence of load on the deterioration in a time-dependent reliability analysis for corroded reinforced concrete beams.
