Effects of ZrO2's mean size on ZrO2/ZrW2O8 composites' properties

ZrO2/ZrW2O8 composites were synthesized using commercial ZrO2 and nano-ZrO2. The micro-structure, sintering ability and thermal expansion of the composites were studied. The ZrW2O8/ZrO2 composite shows almost zero thermal expansion when the weight ratio of ZrO2 and ZrW2O8 is 22:1. However, commercial-ZrO2/ZrW2O8 exhibits low relative density and high porosity. The results indicate that nano-ZrO2 can reduce the sintering temperature of ZrO2 matrix and improve sintering ability of the composites in the same condition. The relative density of nano-ZrO2/ZrW2O8 is 94%, which is higher than 75% of commercial-ZrO2/ZrW2O8.
