In Germany and internationally, coal showed upward development in 2013. All over the world, demand, production and sales of hard coal grew, with altogether moderate price development. In Germany, a relatively strong increase in the use of black coal for electricity generation led to a noticeable increase of consumption compared to the previous year. One essential reason for this was the continued clear price advantage of coal against natural gas for power generation. Since the production of mined coal in Germany was reduced in line with the planned policy, there was a considerable increase in coal imports into Germany. © 2014 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co.
