Vibrations of a thin-walled pressurized cylinder; because of impulse loading induced by a high-energy pulsed laser beam; are investigated. Differential equations that describe cylinder oscillations for the case where variations in the axial direction are negligible are presented. The fluence profile of the incident beam is also assumed not to vary in the axial direction. Analytic expressions that provide the frequency and amplitude of the harmonic vibrational modes are derived. The computation of the laser-induced strain perturbation requires a numerical summation. Numerical results for induced hoop strain are given for both uniform and Gaussian beams. Copyright © 2005 by The Aerospace Corporation;
