Over a century ago, the Martin Guitar Company (Nazareth, Pa.) established four benchmark species as key ingredients of a high-quality instrument: old growth Adirondack Spruce (Picea rubens), Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia nigra), Honduran Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), and African Ebony (Diospyros crassiflora).
