In this paper; a fast algorithm for the rapid calculation of the demagnetization field in micromagnetic modeling is presented. The method is applied to finite element micromagnetic modeling to study the switching phenomenon of perpendicular recording media. The method is shown to provide high efficiency in the numerical simulation with reduced memory requirement. With significant improvement in the computing speed; the practical application of recording physics based simulations can be extended to the investigation of perpendicular magnetic recording processes in various aspects; for instance; a large number of micromagnetic simulations can be carried out to build microtrack model and to predict the performance of perpendicular head and media combinations. © 2006 American Institute of Physics;
