Sustainpack is a four year European initiative of &euro36 million to encourage the wide use of traditional natural based packaging products by producing easily degradable, renewable and recyclable packaging. The purpose of this -project is to establish fibre-based packaging as the dominant player in packaging within the decade, and for this researchers are using nanotechnology and other advanced solutions. Fiber-based packaging materials are at the center of the initiative and the aim is to enhance the competitiveness of fibre-based packaging. This can be done by developing and applying nano and microtechnology reduce the supply chain costs or add value through improved functionality. Biodegrading times will be drastically reduced by developing packaging using biopolymer films and coatings, also this will make fibre packaging able to withstand more stress and increase lifecycle.
