Microstructure and properties of plasma-strayed Al/Al2O3 coating on magnesium alloy

Al/Al2O3 composite coating was deposited on AZ31 magnesium alloy by plasma spray. The microstructure of the coating was examined by means of SEM, TEM and XRD. Corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the coating were also investigated. The results show that the coating consists mainly of Al, Al2O3 and Mg17Al12 phases. Al2O3 particles are uniformly embedded in Al matrix and Mg17Al12 phase mainly distributes at interface of the coating and magnesium alloy. Compared with magnesium alloy, Al/Al2O3 coating has not only higher corrosion resistance but also higher wear resistance.
