A Jess (Java expert system shell)-based method for layering electrical equipments is put forward, which applies production rule based-system knowledge representation. The electrical switching operation rules are represented according to whether the switching operation will bring electrical equipment into an unsafe state. The knowledge representations of several typical electrical equipment connection modes are given, including those of breaker with isolation switches, bus grounding switch, single/double bus with by-pass bus and grounding switch, breakers at both sides of bus, breakers at every side of two-winding or three-winding transformer, and so on. A substation electrical switching operation simulation system is developed to verify its effectiveness.
