Typical filling materials like down, wool and polyester are compared with Lenzing Lyocell Fill fiber, together with the potential uses of lyocell in 100% and carded fleeces blends for various bedding applications. The requirements for filling fibers generally are described, leading on to the launch of Lenzing Lyocell Fill in 2000. This award-winning fiber technology employs natural, renewable raw materials. The characteristics of a filling fiber are then examined in sub-sections on bulkiness, crimp - the spatial expansion of the filling fiber, elasticity and slip-stick behavior. Performance is tested through the cigarette burn test and washability - methods and results are discussed. Comfort-physiology is reviewed, concentrating on moisture management, with Lenzing Lyocell Fill offering outstanding characteristics which can be further enhanced by polyester blends. Fleeces and fiber-balls are predominantly used in bedding products and these are discussed. Potential applications and the characteristic profile of Lenzing Lyocell Fill are summarised in conclusion.
