An overview of dynamic control of tension, thickness and flatness for a tandem cold mill was discussed. The practical implementations of principles of automatic gauge control (AGC) and automatic flatness control were described using feedforward and feedback controllers. Eccentricity identification methods and additional AGC features for strip threading and mill speedup and flying changes for continuous mill were discussed. The techniques to resolve measured flatness error into symmetric and asymmetric components and shape correction were also discussed.
