The initial data given for thermal and hydraulic dimensioning of plate heat exchangers often do not result in the minimum number of plates because the plate-type heat exchangers with different geometry have different thermal and hydraulic characteristics. Therefore, the oversizing of plate-type heat exchangers is frequent, which increases the investments unnecessarily. This article: describes the relations between the thermal and hydraulic characteristics of plate-type heat exchangers; shows the optimum number of plates from thermal and hydraulic perspective; describes the algorithm of a computer program to determine the minimum number of plates.
