The original design protection capacity of the beam-post steel balustrades of the Qingshan Changjiang River Highway Bridge in Wuhan was not sufficient. To improve the safety protection performance of the balustrades; the overall height; patterns of cross beams and posts as well as the base welding plates were optimized and studied; and an optimization design scheme was put forward. The overall height of the beam-post steel balustrades is set at 1.66 m after optimization; using rectangular tubes as the cross beams and exploiting the inclined H-shaped posts. The cross beams and the posts are connected by angle steels; and the base welding plates are parallel to the side of balustrades exposing to impact. The structural parameters of balustrades after optimization were analyzed in accordance with the code requirements; and numerical simulation was conducted to evaluate the safety of the structure after optimization. According to the results of analysis; the parameters after optimization; including the overall height of the balustrades; the transverse load bearing capacity of cross beams against the weighted mean height to bridge deck; overall height of cross beams and the net spacing of cross beams; all meet the code requirements. The ba-lustrades can provide efficient protection to different types of vehicles and freight trucks; the guarding; buffering and guiding performance of which all meet the code requirements; with the protection capacity reaching Grade SS. © 2020; Journal Press; China Railway Bridge Science Research Institute; Ltd.
