Design and experiment of variable intake port for gasoline engine

By using the ProE software, a 3D model of variable intake port was designed and optimized for a 3 L GDIT engine and a partition with variable length and in 1 mm thick was added in the intake port. 3D simulation of base intake port and newly designed one was carried out with the Fire software. The flow characteristics of intake port like tumble ratio and flow coefficient were collected, the intake port and partition were optimized according to these flow characteristics. Then the intake port was machined by machining center and assembled with the partition. Tests were conducted to measure and optimize the tumble ratio and flow coefficient of the new intake port. According to the test results, the flow characteristics of the new intake port are the best when the length of the partition is 85 mm. ©, 2015, Chinese Society for Internal Combustion Engines.
