US-Canada river diversion

The Canadian Governmernt is against American plans for a revised version of the Garrison Diversion Project, which would channel water from the Missouri-Mississippi river basin to communities in North Dakota. The water would everually be diverted into the Sheyenne river watershed. The Canadians fear that the introduction of foreign species could adversely affect the sensitive ecosystem of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba. The project was originally proposed in 1944 and has been considered at intervals current objections.
