Performance of plywood treated with a novel P-N flame retardant

To protect the world's only environmentally friendly renewable building material wood from fire and minimize the loss caused by fire, a series of new P-N flame retardant were synthesized. The effect of addition ways of nano- SiO2 on properties of flame retardant plywood was investigated. According to orthogonal experiment design, nine flame retarded plywood were prepared. Bonding strength and limited oxygen index (LOI) of plywood were measured to optimize the manufacture conditions. The results showed that the best way to add nano-SiO2 into P-N flame retardant was before the reaction at the level of 2%. The optical conditions were concentration of flame retardant 10%, glue spread of 280 g/m2, impregnation time for 3 h and hot pressing temperature at 120°. Under these conditions, the bonding strength of the plywood samples was 1.30 MPa and LOI was 37.4%. It provided an alternative way to protect life, health and property from fire caused by wood. © Research India Publications.
