In Central Europe as well as in Scandinavia, low frequency a. c. single phase current was already spred at local and long distance railroads in the first decades of 20th century and has been a success till today. First railway thus equipped not only for tests started scheduled operation at the beginning of 1905 between Murnau and Oberammergau, Upper-Bavaria.
