The optimum design of barrier screws can largely eliminate the chance of plugging while improving the melting and mixing performance. The principle of the barrier screw is to split the screw channel into two channels separated by a barrier flight. Barrier screws with optimized design increase throughput, dimensional control, and product quality. Screws with long barrier sections are more susceptible to plugging because the melting process may not have advanced sufficiently at the point where the barrier flight is introduced. An important advantage of barrier screws is that there is little or no chance of unmelt beyond the barrier section.
