New overhead line equipment on existing structures of Great Eastern route

The Great Eastern route, from London Liverpool Street via Shenfield to Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea is equipped with 60-year old overhead line equipment with fixed termination conductors. For the 2012 Olympics the performance and reliability of the line have to be improved for the increasing number of trains and a speed of up to 160 km/h with three pantographs per train. This busy line can only afford a limited number and duration of service suspensions which would be insufficient to allow the complete renewal of the overhead line. For this reason, a new overhead line system had to be designed which can be mounted on the existing structures.
