Bacterial identification systems have evolved as our knowledge of bacterial classification has progressed and mainly through the use of new tools. These tools have allowed changes in classification, changes of names and the identification of new species. In order to be accurate, identification methods must be both comprehensive and evolve regularly. Current identification systems may be manual eg use of cultural characteristics coupled with biochemical tests, or automated. Automated systems offer a number of advantages to the end- user: standardised results, extensive databases, ease-of-use and increased productivity. This paper will discuss currently available manual and automated bacterial identification systems and will give some insight into the future of bacterial identification, in particular molecular methods.
