Polyolefin, a kind of thermoplastic with low price, excellent mechanical properties and chemical stability, was widely used in market. However, as extremely flammable substance with the production of a large number of droplets, the application of polyolefin in fields requiring high fire safety, such as wire and cabled, was restricted. To improve the flame-retardant performance of polyolefin, various flame retardants and technologies have been developed. Among them, silicone flame retardant, with high-efficiency, anti-droplet, low-smoke and environment-friendly properties, was considered to be a promising flame retardant. Therefore, the research progress of silicone flame retardant in polyolefins in recent years was reviewed in this paper, and the application prospect was also forecasted. © 2020, Editorial Board of Polymer Materials Science & Engineering.
